The USPO has a monopoly on delivering regular mail. Fedex and UPS are barred from competing. If the USPO had to compete without the monopoly it would fail.

I don't want my health care run by the same folks who brought you the saying "going postal."

The history of the Post Office vs Fedex shows that you can compete against the government only where the government allows it. Fedex is not allowed to deliver regular mail or ever put a letter into a mailbox. The government does allow it to compete in overnight mail and packages but this is subject to change. They could pass a law and make Fedex illegal overnight.

Where the two do compete head-to-head, Fedex operates at a profit and the Post Office at a loss. However, Fedex's profit is again at at the mercy of the government; if the government was willing to operate at a much large loss, the Post Office could slash its rates so that Fedex could not compete.

When government competes against private sector, the private sector performs better but the government owns the playing field and the rulebook.
