Sigma shows MPEG-1 at Asia Comdex. Hardware assisted for networks. And Crowded? I think both visitors were impressed........................

Sigma unveils network MPEG family

<Picture><Picture><Picture>

Last week the Singapore ONE stand at Comdex Asia was crowded with exhibitors and visitors. Olivetti was demonstrating hardware-assisted MPEG-1 playback on a prototype Singapore ONE server. Full screen, full motion video was streaming over the broadband Internet using a REALmagic card in a PC. It was the same at Networld+Interop in Atlanta. Over two dozen companies were demonstrating Sigma's Netstream technology.

Netstream includes specialised hardware and software developed specifically for the demanding needs of networked video It can be used for both Video on Demand and broadcast video playback. It will support Microsoft ActiveMovie and DirectShow 2.0. These APIs are used by most leading full-screen video servers, including Microsoft's NetShow FSV, the Oracle Video Server, the Silicon Graphics WebForce Media Server, Sun's MediaCenter, and the Starlight Starcaster.

There is a lot to be said for hardware-assisted MPEG decode. By handling both audio and video, Netstream keeps the CPU free to perform other tasks, such as using a spreadsheet or word processor while video is playing in a window. Keeping the CPU freed up is critical in a wide variety of network video applications, which frequently need to use the Pentium CPU for tasks such as network data transfer, desktop productivity software, interactive applications, and MPEG encoders used in distance learning.

It seems that Sigma has a new lease of life. It was the first in the field of MPEG decoders at a cost of millions. It now looks set to reap the benefit as we move into a broadband Internet era.

Whats the cost???

I have a dazzle, and have been actively encoding highlights off of my old vhs and 8mm tapes. now that I have 600meg of compressed digital video, I have to put it somewhere. zip is to slow, jazz is to expensive (and slow too, I think), the natural combo is the recordable cd.
anyone know of the cheapest cdr for the notebook? (parrallel port type would make the most sense)
Time to start authoring VCDs!!!!!!
GO DAZZLE
K
If anyone knows the data rate of zip, jazz, and cdR of hand, it would much appreciated.
