Government doesn't have that option... they have 1000 things to do.

They don't have 1000 things they HAVE to do. They have chosen to take on a lot--things that they either aren't well suited for and things that they are stuck doing with one hand tied behind their backs due to politics. But almost everything they do they volunteer to do. They choose to engage despite being ill equipped to do certain things. If they were more discriminating and not overreach so much, they'd have a better record and a better reputation.

Full disclosure: retired fed.

Private companies do do things better. .... Government doesn't have that option... they have 1000 things to do. .... no private company could take up their multi-tasking challenge and do better... IMHO.

True. That's why I think that the comparison needs to be done between the government and the private sector as a whole (NOT with individual companies). Recall that the government does its job sector by sector, one "competency" at a time. A food inspector knows nothing about controlling air traffic.

The sizes of the private and public sectors already reached a point when they are comparable.
