what happened is the market is suffering from serious damage, with the generals crippled, the officers wounded and the infantry getting picked off one by one. look at the technicals. there was major buying yesterday, but the day before was women and children first. people are selling into strength, and the market is churnning again, with a new rotation of leaders if the bear isn't awakened from its slumber. and you can't compare qntm to wdc or seg. its a stand alone because their dlt division is growing at triple digits, with fat margins that make up half of the eps. and so on and so on. i actually bought back in after it held up in the face of wdc's and seg's sector bombs. nothing was making it go lower. very strong stock. and if we're at these valuations for a while, i'm adding with cash i have around. if i have any around.

good luck.

Hi Tycoon:

Here are my thoughts:

>IBM announced 18.2GB and 10000 RPM drives today, I was wondering if this
>puts them in the leadership position and if so, by how great a margin?

I think IBM will steal the show at the high end HDD market. SEG will feel the
most pinch, since they are heavily dependent on that segment. QNTM will feel
the least effect. They and WDC will continue to nibble a small share of that
market. I dont see them doing any better than that.

At the desktop side, things are different. QNTM and WDC will lead the way. IBM
doesnt have the cost competetiveness. SEG is hurting big. I will stick with
QNTM, did you see their Fireball ST shipments last Q?? 4 million drives!! They
are leading the MR curve. I have no doubt they will do really well. On top of
that we have the DLT icing. Didnt SEG announce their Travan drives?? We have to
see how that plays out.

>On first glance, it seems to me that APM (Applied Magnetics) long term
>prospects are clouded by developments at IBM and at the new venture
>Terastor whose technolgies may outpace and/or outdate the technologies in
>use there.

APM's MR technology transistion is a huge risk. I think the whole world knows
that. RDRT has better MR technology(IMO). I dont think that Terastor has
anything to do with this. They will only complement DLT type storage, not
compete with HDs.

Hope that helps,
