Ending obesity isn't something I think our government should be involved in.

Seems to me that it could play a useful role. Or a semi-totalitarian one. The government was a key player in reducing the number of people who smoke. I think they deserve points for that. I'm not sanguine that they could be as effective with obesity or that they wouldn't make mistakes. Smoking is a much simpler problem. But a message from the government that obesity kills couldn't hurt. Plus, as you mentioned, stopping those things that contribute to the problem.

I think Huckabee has the right approach on this. When he was governor here, he was told by his doc that he was pre-diabetic and if he didn't get control of it he was headed for trouble.

Since then he has been an advocate for the "cause" of controlling obesity, but not of "government" control. The appropriate venue, e.g., for a president, is use of the bully pulpit and through public education.

When they start phasing out steak and potatoes, or surtaxing Big Macs and fries, I think you're REALLY going to have people disrupting town halls.

Well the government did a pretty good job with smoking and that was one of the few things they did well. But it shouldn't be part of the health care issue. Anyone who is overweight, including myself, knows why. There is an enormous amount of information about how to lose weight. It is not so much about information as it is about changing the way people view the problem.
