The federal "Cash for Clunkers" rebate program has been unexpectedly popular and required a $2 billion infusion.
In the past six months, the auto industry has undergone the equivalent of open-heart surgery in the back seat of a Camaro on a bumpy country road.

Once-in-a-lifetime events happened with regularity. The lights went out on dealerships and factories. Tens of thousands of careers ended or were forever changed.

And now, with the federal "Cash for Clunkers" rebate program, the trucks, vans and sport-utility vehicles of recent decades are being taken off the road and turned into scrap.

Those people who lived through it are left to ask, "What just happened?"
