The Italian death rate was over 1% - com gusto deaths. Note how Spain stayed clear - good move. France was a bit worse off than Italy, being in the thick of it. Italy was more or less a motorway for Rommel and for the 8th Army. Siding with Adolf was a losing proposition but it obviously seemed like a good idea at the time.
