Steve, Mark, Don't see how a market share comparison between IBM and CPQ is valid. IBM OWNED the mainframe market back then, share in the 80+ percent range, much higher margin product. That's why they GOT complacent. CPQ has nowhere near the share in it's market, the product is much lower margin, and they don't have the luxury to get complacent. If CPQ eventually emerges as the overall PC winner, then it might eventually happen. Until then, forget it. Besides, Pfeiffer does not appear to be an Akers.... John

mark, that's because IBM had terrible systems and they always thouht they couldn't fall. cpq on the other hand is constantly trying to re-invent itself and re-engineering major processes. I published this paper 7 yrs ago as a result of my yrs of expereince working at cpq. I can remember cpq having a great yr and then the cfo would call me in and assign me on an "out of business scenario team" <gggg> no kidding..we would actually say that if we don't cut mat'l cost 40% we are out of business or if we don't redesign the memory strategy then memory is tight and we are out of business. here's the profile of cpq. exchange2000.com
