All the Chinese have to do is stop buying Treasuries.

And they would love to do that. But what to buy instead? Their "Beggar thy neighbor" policy has stuck them with the Dollar, and they are helpless. I am overcome with schadenfreude for them.

I have often wondered when the Chinese will just say, we will take Taiwan now and if you try to stop us, we will not only stop buying your Treasuries, we will flood the market with them. It is unclear to me what response options we would have to pick from.

It's not really practical for the Chinese (along with the Japanese and Arabs) to just cut us off cold, but they can squeeze us while making various demands that address the global financial imbalances.

We may be testing this next year during the open bidding season for Alaska's natural gas. International bidders have expressed interest in 3 billion cubic feet/day of LNG export capacity, which would kill Palin's pipeline to the lower 48. Will the US government allow Alaska energy to be exported to the hungry markets of China, India, Japan, and Korea? The Chinese are still smarting over their failure to acquire Unocal a few years ago, and they have even more money to throw around now...
