Cosseted academic. Smells like that to me. But he's also a front man, letting Rahm and Pelosi run the domestic agenda. He may be an empty suit. Sort of a shocker to me. like someone told him he could come off as the smartest man in the room if he only kept his mouth shut. Or limited his public utterances to what his teleprompter tells him.

He learned that behavior in academia, How to politely disagree (blow you off). He's got that distant academic persona that looks down its nose at you.

I have often found my views in some groups to be stunning to them. One such group contains a lot of lawyers. For whatever reason they all think alike politically and were stunned by an articulate argument that told them they were simply wrong. Eventually a few others spoke up. Then the debate got to be fun. The concept of Tort reform was toxic. They all wanted change until it impacted them. It was/is hilarious.

"I think this is an essential difference between Obama and Bill Clinton. Clinton came up in Arkansas and always understood that conservatives were real and he had to deal with them - trick'em, charm'em, run 'em down, triangulate, steal their ideas, or if all else failed, compromise - but he knew they were there."

Clinton is smarter. Obama thought Chicago politics would work anywhere.
