Hawking came down with ALS in grad school, not high school. Can't liberals get ANY facts right? His disease is degenerative over time. He didn't become unable to get out of bed by himself till he was world famous. And there's no doubt that helps him get good care out of NHS. Even at that, his 24 hr nursing care comes from grants from foundations, not NHS. His speech synthesizer was provided by academic wellwishers, not NHS. If he weren't world famous, he might well be dead already. My opinions about health care in places like Europe is based on news articles from there.
