Street markings, such as the orange scrawlings in your photos, are sometimes deceiving if you attempt to assign 'current' operator names to them, since they sometimes refer to underground occupants by using the latter's legacy designations, which are sometimes more than a decade old. Long after both Teleport Communications Group and MCI's Metropolitan Fiber Systems were acquired by AT&T and Verizon, respectively, for example, new street cuts for the latter two BELLS are still being designated with stencilings of TCG and MFS. I don't know exactly what NXTG stands for at this time, but a SWAG would lead me to guess perhaps Nextlink (the Nextlink Telecom Group?), since Nextlink was XO Communications' predecessor, and they may still be known as such (and perhaps vice versa, as well) by the city's underground records keeping folks. This would be a good question to ask of our friends who were once employed over in Empire City Subway Ltd., no? The asphalt saw cut you're looking at here is typical of a cable operator's trenchless cable placement technique used in dense urban settings. It's usually created for the placement of a cable operator's distribution fiber to neighborhood amplifier and/or hybrid fiber-cable (HFC) field gear, which is what I suspect the underground box emplacement in your your earlier post was all about. What appears even more intriguing to me than the sawcut, now that you've highlighted the latter, are the numerous, additional duct markings that appear to be related, or at least have been queued up to be constructed during the same effort. Could it be that the city has become that organized as to actually plan a street opening in this manner? I hope so, and if so kudos to whoever's behind it. If you should learn anything further concerning these magnificent specimens of street art, by all means kindly post it here. I know what you're thinking, btw. Be forewarned, however. The city doesn't take kindly to its citizens doing midnight construction runs along its streets and avenues without first extracting their vig ;) FAC ------
