When the company reports fourth-quarter and year-end results on Wednesday, investors expect to hear that business conditions have improved--particularly since peers in the sector are suggesting that the worst is behind them. Buzz On Tuesday, Agilent, which provides measurement solutions to electronics, life sciences and chemical companies in addition to the communications sector, exceeded Wall Street's expectations for its third quarter and guided for a modest recovery in 2010. Shares were up by $1.86, or 7.9%, at $25.42 during Tuesday's afternoon trading session. The promising results came on the heels of a bullish report from Harris ( HRS - news - people ). Last week, the communications equipment manufacturer noted a pickup in orders for three of its four divisions and hiked the low-end of its annual guidance range for earnings from continuing operations. The company now expects a range of $3.25 to $3.40 a share, up from $3.05 to $3.40, previously. Shares of technology and equipment providers traded broadly higher on Tuesday. Harris shares were up by $1, or 3.1%, at $33.61; Tollgrade Communications ( TLGD - news - people ) saw shares up by 2 cents, or 0.4%, at $5.57; Newport ( NEWP - news - people )'s stock added 43 cents, or 5.9%, to $7.73 and Oplink Communications ( OPXT - news - people ) gained 22 cents, or 1.7%, to $13.06. Shares of JDS Uniphase ( JDSU - news - people ), meanwhile, were up by 11 cents, or 1.9%, at $5.81. In addition to an update on its restructuring progress, investors will be looking to hear what's in store for the network tools business that JDS recently acquired from Finisar ( FNSR - news - people ). Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters are anticipating a fourth-quarter loss of 2 cents a share and sales of $278.6 million, which sits squarely between the company's guidance for sales of $265 million to $285 million. For 2009, analysts expect a profit of 18 cents and sales of $1.3 billion.
