We may well differ on this point. I'm still watching and waiting, trying to decide how much is enough. Right now I lean toward a reading that says without some sort of cost disciplining mechanism, either a strong public option or some yet to be discovered strong surrogate, the opportunity for systemic change is lost. The politics are likely as good as they are going to get so, this argument goes, it's now or never.

As I say, I lean in that direction. The political decision is then how to advance that argument in a way that increases the probability of serious change either in this go round or the next one. James Carville argues, as I understand it, to pin the public option flag at the top of the flag pole and, while losing, lose in such a way that you are building a political movement for serious change. I understand that argument but am not yet there. Still waiting to see what happens this time around.

<<<Tomorrow is another day, and the next one is always coming soon. Just like the stock markets.>>>

It is more like a horse race. At the highest level of competition the margin for victory may depend on the right horse on the right course. Horses for courses as they say.

Wrt health care we may just have the wrong horse in Obama. In this race we may just need an LBJ or an RFK type person. Either someone that can twist arms or one that has terrific passion.

The stars are just not linining up for this race. If we don't get it now, we may not get it for another generation or two.

But, don't get me wrong, I still think we have the right man at the right time in Obama except in the case of health care.
