Dems' Ace in the Hole on Health Care: Tort Reform
By Bob Beckel

Beckel is trying to talk sense to the Democrats from within the party. A smart move to the bipartisan center with a cover act of "Aw shucks, we were never that keen on the government option, that was just a few of our more zealous House members talking" could produce a moderate Senate bill that would pass.

But I think it's too late for that. Obama made too many promises to his looney left base and they are emotionally invested in the government option, which itself is second-best to the single payer system they really want.

There aren't enough pragmatists in the administration to heed Beckel's advice. On Sunday the administration floated trial balloons about bailing on the government option. Their base went ballistic and today they backed down. The government option is still in, for the moment.
