What total BS!. The best system is one where the use pays the doctor directly. The only thing that is really needed is catastrophic insurance. Most of us can pay for office visits and lab tests, even short hospital stays. Even the very poor can pay for this from existing government handouts. They already have catastrophic insurance at the emergency room. You are just to naive to understand this whole issue is made up of whole cloth simply to convert us into good socialists. This and global warming.

>> One argument that is much favored by some is to reduce the admin overhead with single payer.

The problem with that argument is there is no evidence to suggest that single payer will reduce admin overhead a bit.

There are inefficiencies inherent in having government involved at all. The inefficiency within health care reimbursement stems predominantly from MC and MA; private insurance companies seem to do just fine.

A good example is the frequent changing of MC intermediaries which stems from the competitive bidding process. It takes a very long time for new intermediaries to become efficient in their operations, and about the time they do, they lose the contract. Nobody seems to give a crap about the effects of this on the reimbursement system.
