Both sides of this little sub section of the debate seem to be acting as if different people on the same side can't have different motives. (and its not even just "different people", the same person can have multiple motivations) That's a nice way of putting it. My mood isn't so generous at the moment. I'd call it cognitive bias gone wild. On the fringes are folks whose knee-jerk application of the devil effect to their adversaries shorts their brains. The opposition cannot merely be misguided or flawed, in whole or in part; it must be universally and utterly evil.
