To quote the old cliche, the truth is out there but it is buried in a sea of screaming and lying and spinning. A large slice of the electorate only listens to a few media sources, often just those which spin to suit their personal biases. They accept that as truth and look no further. Scaremongering pops up whenever we have a major issue for one main reason, it works. I hope we see more of a backlash like you pushing back at offensive fundraising messages. The strong disapproval ratings for congressional Republicans on the healthcare issue is also an interesting data point. But overall, the space and oxygen required for an honest, grown-up debate are being steadily sucked out by the spinmeisters and sensation-crazed cable "news" outlets in search of ratings. The space we have on this thread for honest debate only exists because I've invested a lot of time the last four years trying to create and maintain just such a forum. And so it goes....

It's approximately the same percentage of people who think that the Democratic health reform bill includes "death panels" and amounts to a complete government takeover of healthcare. These people show now signs, that I can see, of wanting to know the truth. - Allen
