Yes, some are throwing in the towels, and many more to follow. 64% of US real estate sales are now distressed sales:

"The market for home purchases can be divided into segments of 26% for damaged REO, 23% for move-in ready REO, 14% for short sales, and 36% for non-distressed properties."

This survey/article is must reading for those trying to understand current market of distressed US real estate sales.
