1) Whats the goal of reform - is it about insuring the uninsured or is it about controlling costs?

I think, Brumar, that you know the answer - it is about who is going to be in charge. It's about political control. Savings and all sorts of other good things will come later -- after the well-meaning government takes over from greedy capitalists.

1. Both.

2. Medicare costs have been rising slower than the private sector, around 5-6% vs. 8-9%. And this is despite caring for a sicker population.

3. "If we could buy a high deductible catastrophic health policy for every uninsured person for a fraction of Obamacare, why couldn't we just do that?"

Because that doesn't address one of the fundamental problem, which is that the growth of health costs is far outstripping our ability to pay for it.
