Do you think FED and Treasury and Gov might have been concerned about Sudden Stop? Interestingly, Brad Setser flagged that condition sometime in Q4 2007. Of course, lots of others were looking out for it as well. Another way to look at the crash was that it technically starts with the FNM/FRE "event" as that is when we went "banana." Just like an E.M. country of old, we were between the threat of FNM/FRE starting meltdown in our system via a conventional pathway, and then the fear(perhaps) that nationalization itself would trigger foreign flight--aka Sudden Stop.

Coda: Brad Setser will no longer be updated the public on his analysis of foreign flows, btw. He was hired away by someone else, thus depriving us of the viewpoint. I think you've heard of his employer? : The US Gov. :-)
