Lane, it's always curious to hear folks revolt at the idea of government attempting to influence people.

Management of human behaviors is job #1 at most tabacco, alcohol, pharmaceutical companies. For example, pharma spends 2x as much on advertising as they do on drug research. The food industry spends billions on the encouragement of consumption of foods that are harmful to your health.

It would be ok with me if the government told them to cut it out or if we had a health care system that could devote more resources to promote a more balanced picture.

Our current health system doesn't devote much time or money to health promotion. It does spend a fair amount of money on self promotion and lobbying!
