I don't remember a lot of talk about deficits from EITHER side.

BUT, I guess that's reasonable considering we were looking at a 1930's style depression at the time.

People were a lot more worried about keeping their jobs and houses than they were about deficit spending.

Not to say that deficits weren't "mentioned". I remember when Reagan ran and gave his speech about how our national debt in 1980 (if measured in dollars would reach to the moon and back). He then proceeded to triple or quadruple that national debt in 8 years.
