My favorite project was a beat-frequency metal detector, built entirely from scratch. But then I discovered computer programming and dropped electronics.

Speaking of Heath Kit, my first computer was a Zenith Z100, with the all-in-one design, and two microprocessors so it could boot either 8-bit CP-M or 16-bit ZDOS (out of the same stable as MSDOS, but slightly incompatible, unfortunately). I learned a lot with that machine, although I didn't do any useful work with it. I think it was the most expensive machine I ever bought. Eventually I sold it for $50 to someone who just wanted something to run CP-M.
