Perhaps you weren't around, or were not paying attention as it happened. But the power of the UAW accumulated over an extended period of time as a result of repeated strikes and threats of strikes.

Managements in the US are held to account by a quarterly accounting process that encourages window-dressing and kicking the can down the road. Management at GM, DCX and F did precisely that. Caved to the pressure of the UAW.


Let me see if I undersand you correctly. Mgmt agreed to pay whatever the UAW asked in terms of labor costs even though they knew that that would guarantee they could not compete on the world stage and it would end in the total destruction of the companies for whom they worked. This happened in no other industry but the auto industry and you think this explanation makes perfectly good sense. Uh.....huh. Interesting.
