This is the only country that suspiciously eyes its government that it proudly votes in.

Even though they vote for a government, they do not trust that government to provide the security. Hence the need to carry guns, a concept from the days of "the Wild West" days.

We want to ensure that we can each have guns to kill one another. But would it not be a better idea to instead provide everyone the means to fend off germs and viruses?

It is not a PC or Mac issue, or a conservative/liberal issue. Instead, it is the difference between a civilized and a uncivilized society. The other nations of the world are more civilized today and this country has some ways to go to catch up with the rest.

The government is the only one that either makes choices for me or even takes away my right to refuse with the threat of force.

There would be a gigantic backlash against the pace of change even if we were living during good economic times. You dont have to be an angry white male to dislike the amount of government intrusion in our lives that will be inherent in the current policy choices.

How efficient and effective government services are when in monopolistic control was pointed out to me in glaring detail today, as I spent 3 hours obtaining a learners permit for my 16 year old son today.

I shudder to think what our health care system would look like under complete government control. Just about everyone visits a DMV in their lifetime, often more than once, and rarely are they run efficiently. Each time I visit, obvious process improvement methods could be put in place immediately at near zero costs, yet no one considers them. That's what average Americans fear when they hear "government run health care". They think, government run DMV, government run social security offices, and government run Passport processing.
