>>koan, viewing issues as either liberal or conservative is something that I do not share. The politics in other countries are shaped more on economic lines such as capitalist, socialist and communist.

Communism collapsed. Then we have capitalism with its cyclic rise and fall. Currently the purely capitalistic US economy is in a downdraft. Socialism is bringing prosperity to once battered and shattered Europe, to India and to China which has migrated to a softened version of Communism.<<

You don't think politics is shaped by personalities? People on the right are much different types of people than people on the left. Prime example is that poll about scientists. Only 6% call themselves Republicans and 6% lean Republican. 81% lean democratic.

Those numbers are startling and clearly demonstrate two populations of people. Liberals (dems) and conservatives (Republicans) in this country have not changed in almost 100 years.

Your thread and Ann's thread says it all.

A mixture of capitalisma and socialism is called a welfare state. Every democracy is some form of welfare state.

All we liberals try to do is apply science and logic to determine what part should be capitalist and what part should be socialist. E.g. generally speaking, liberals believe all prisons should be the responsibility of the state (to ensure the prisoners safety), end of death penalty, gun control. Universal health care, universal free university education.

We want public financing of campaigns because it is the only way to get rid of lobbyists who are ruining our country.
