My parents finally got a color TV many years after I left home.

I never had one until I was 34, and that was a present from someone who didn't like being at my house without a television.

When I first moved to Los Angeles I worked out at a new gym called Matrix One attended by many celebrities, virtually none of whom I recognized. When I asked them in a conversation what sort of work they did, they were either bemused or anxious.

At the time I recognized Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Sally Struthers walked around in a pink work-out suit which had the words "Movie Star" spelled out in Rhinestones, which wasn't exactly true. Candy, the wife of the television producer, Aaron Spelling worked out there with a trainer while she wore a silk warm-up suit while wearing a diamond necklace - I kid you not. It was the sort of silliness you wouldn't see in any other town. I just had to ask someone who she was. It wasn't something you'd see every day.
