your understanding on all points are wrong

hong kong is freedom for all, including big wheels and little potatos, and is one of a kind in this universe, singular in this galaxy, simply unique

below is a developing e-mail conversation amongst the boyz representing many continents and a lot of territories

player one - american good old boy living in hk If nothing else, it incentivizes me to stay in Hong Kong rather than return to the US anytime in the near future....

With a Canadian wife and kids, I have an advantage over most other Americans from a tax efficiency situation as long as we remain in Hong Kong or until Canada goes the way of global taxation....those efficiencies all go away if we move to the US....or Canada for that matter....

player two - swiss gentleman living in hk and thailand It puzzles me why on earth anyone who is financially comfortable would want to go and live in the US!

High taxes, hypocritical morals and horrible women! Still, the USD may rally here for a while. The trading range against the Euro has been very narrow for about two months and a big move is coming. Question is of course in which direction....

player one It is not just the US.

I am told that at almost every dinner party in London nowadays, the conversation revolves around how to flee the country and where to go.

Between the top tax rate of 50% plus the 11% "contribution" to the Social Security equivalent, many really are seeing tax rates at 60+% and are looking to live elsewhere.... Their question is when and where will they move.....

Global taxation coming soon to Brits as well?

player two The problem is of course that due to the local nature of their business and also for family reasons - and debts - moving is not an easy option.

player one All of my ancestors fled Europe for the US for either religious freedom or economic opportunity.
Unfortunately, the US doesn't seem to offer much on the economic opportunity front nowadays....

Religious freedom vis a vis the US depends on the country....

Interestingly (to me at least) two of my g-g-g-grandfathers were signatories on Continental Currency in Massachusetts and Georgia. (one was the next door neighbor to John Adams, was great friends with John Hancock, and hosted many of the first anti-Royalty meetings in Boston).

Perhaps that is where I get my Libertarian tendencies......

player three - character in hk if by religious freedom you mean an organization able to organize a state w/i a state to manipulate its politics, usa has religious freedom

if by religious freedom you mean people are able to believe as they would without right to approach others to believe same, hong kong wins hands down and china, jay-ly, is not far behind

player four - master of universe in london I can confirm that! The UK is fast losing it's shine. In London we are all looking at relocating, with Switzerland usually being the preferred option even though the most fiscally advantageous cantons are the most boring ones!

player five - master of own universe in texas player three has probably got it most right, or the context, at least. in the big history picture, some folks are going to find themselves moving back from whence their forebears fled. just part of the ebb and flow, fortune and misfortune resting only on the catch of the passing wave (s).

i've always liked the song by the way, and some other tidbits at the bottom:

Wish that I was on ol’ Rocky Top,
down in the Tennessee hills;
Ain’t no smoggy smoke on Rocky Top;
Ain’t no telephone bills;
Once I had a girl on Rocky Top;
Half bear, other half cat;
Wild as a mink, but sweet as soda pop,
I still dream about that;

Once two strangers climbed ol’ Rocky Top,
lookin’ for a moonshine still;
Strangers ain’t come down from Rocky Top;
Reckon they never will;
Corn won’t grow at all on Rocky Top;
Dirt’s too rocky by far;
That’s why all the folks on Rocky Top
get their corn from a jar;

I’ve had years of cramped-up city life
Trapped like a duck in a pen;
All I know is it’s a pity life
Can’t be simple again.

Rocky Top, you’ll always be
home sweet home to me;
Good ol’ Rocky Top;
Rocky Top, Tennessee;
Rocky Top, Tennessee.

player six - master of own galaxy in san francisco soon, it may well become...

"money rock, you will soon be-home sweet home to me....
no more of my hard earned taxes-heading to the middle east....

(that's why I never made it as a lyricist)
