1 - It is necessary and appropriate to identify interested parties in any such public matter. The suggestion that to do so is an ad hominem attack presupposes that the positions taken by the named parties would defame them if they were publicly associated with said positions, which of course could be the case.

2 - You make an interesting point. No doubt some protesters were personally motivated, so at most only the rest were pressured or paid off.
