Seems to me that there is a difference between caring enough about something to protest on your own initiative and caring enough to allow oneself to be instigated and organized to go protest, not to mention paid.

I suppose there could be a significant number of people, who care but not quite enough to go, but then go because they are being paid. But that strikes me as very unlikely.

Also absent specific evidence of such a thing, I would think the default assumption here would be the opposite. It easy to make such claims, much harder to prove them wrong. If they are true it should be easier to prove that, then to prove them false if they are false. (If I was one of the protesters, how could I prove I didn't take some small amount of money?)

As for it being a show, well all protests are in a sense shows, I'm now sure what the point is here.
