If patents are routinely extended (rather than a new patent granted, a situation that I'm more knowledgeable about and which in this context is less problematic) for such, than effectively you just have longer patents.

It would be more honest to simply make the patent term longer, but the practical effect is pretty much the same.

How long patents should be is another question, and not one that IMO has one simple and obviously correct answer.
