Although they looked exhausted early in the week, by week's end they appeared fully recovered.. At Friday's close, the Nasdaq Composite Index was up 28.45% CYTD, or Contest Year To Date, (vs. up 29.09% CYTD a week ago) and the Nasdaq Biotech Index was up 14.20% CYTD (vs. up 13.55% CYTD a week ago). Due in large part to ACAD's blow-up the Contest median did not fare as well, closing up 20.95% CYTD (vs. up 25.75% CYTD a week ago). ACAD's collapse also had a major impact on the Contest rankings. GENE's portfolio was cut almost in half and RKRW's portfolio now leads by a wide margin, while NIGEL's portfolio has moved into third place. As a result of two buyouts, NIGEL's portfolio is now fairly concentrated with only 7 stocks and a big move by any of them could turn it into a contender for the top spot. The week's closing CYTD percentages are: RKRW up 137.58%, GENE up 81.44%, NIGEL up 77.78%. At Friday's close, 26 of the 32 Contest portfolios were in the black and 20 of the 32 were beating the NBI. Portfolio adjustments: As indicated in my mid-week update, I did the MEDX buyout reallocation using a $16 buyout price and the 8/28 closing prices. There have been more buyouts than usual this year, increasing the odds that I've screwed up the reallocations. So, please let me know if my performance numbers are way different from yours. Have a terrific Labor Day weekend folks!
