Rationing by queue is rarely used in this country. We use different techniques. Of all the methods of rationing, I find waiting lists particularly distasteful because they are so mindless.

People would do well to consider why there are waits at all as it is a key to the future of our health care. Why are there not a sufficient number of providers that one can walk in and receive relatively immediate treatment (obviously, sometimes, waits are necessary, as when you're trying a new drug or waiting on test results).

I'm constantly amazed, when we put a system in for a new provider (i.e., one just opening his/her practice), how quickly the schedule fills up. Particularly for primary care providers.

The day is coming when seeing a physician requires a referral from a NP or PA.
