they, in the aggregate, are good at defending their own homeland, but had not been particularly known for invading in any direction, and so serve as good neighbors guarding back door, not as areas to expand into had china been so uncharacteristically inclined. frontier suggests 'arena for exploration'

one does not need to, and should avoid exploring afganistan.
