Earthquakes are always there. Taht's one reason the big one in SF was a shocker. we are so used to them. ya, I realized the house rocked more than usual and it was the first time anything was broken... but when I left to go get my dog from the kennel (i'd taken her that morning for a bath), I was not prepared for what I found on the streets. and poor Sasha, my dog... took me several minutes to talk her out of her cage she was in. she doesn't even like the 4th of July.
