thanks, Karen. Best friend since high school and his family with us since Friday. They live in Tujunga, where the two firemen drove off the road. Can't go back for third day, at first because fire was coming down the hill toward them, now because the smoke is so bad. one of the daughters, 22, is sickly as it is.

Been here forever, went to UCLA, never seen it like this. Everything covered with ash. Wind cleared out part of the San Fernando Valley late yesterday afternoon, white thick smoke back again this morning. smell of smoke everywhere, huge white plumes miles into the sky, so thick it's like fog, and a light covering of ash for many miles.

during day can't seen the flames but at night they're visible. East rim of the valley, alright for miles now for two night. Big flare ups the night before. LA as Dante's Inferno.

Reminds me of a Joan Didion novel from the 60's, "Play it as it lays," LA burning.
