Livingston Enterprises Completes Massive K56flex(TM)
Upgrade of 700 PortMaster 3 ISP Customers

PLEASANTON, Calif., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Livingston Enterprises Inc. today announced that, since first offering a free upgrade to K56flex capability, more than 700 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have upgraded their PortMaster 3 remote access servers with Lucent Technologies-based K56flex modems. Livingston began shipping the modems to its North America PortMaster 3 ISP customers in August of this year and is now providing upgrades to an additional 200 international customers. The international phase of this upgrade is scheduled for completion by
year-end 1997.

This rapid worldwide deployment of Lucent-based K56flex modems and PortMaster 3s is significant. Leading chip-makers are promoting K56flex as the interoperability modem protocol of choice, and more than 140 client modem and OEM PC vendors are distributing K56flex modems.
They can be completely confident that their customers will be able to connect with a fully-compatible ISP. In a related announcement today, Livingston is launching a Cooperative Advertising Program that can provide up to $15,500 to ISPs that deploy PortMaster 3s equipped
with Lucent K56flex modems. This program is designed to further accelerate the deployment of central-site K56flex ports by providing marketing incentives to ISPs that already support K56flex.

''Our PortMaster 3 ISP customers have developed a tremendous appetite for K56flex,'' says Joe Sasek, vice president of sales and marketing for Livingston. ''They've gotten the message from their own customers who know K56flex is capturing market-share worldwide on both the central and the client side. As the Internet access market grows, more ISPs and end-users will convert to the Livingston offering than to any other high-speed modem dial-up access service. The reason is obvious: together, Livingston and Lucent provide an industry-leading connectivity solution.''

End-users who want to find K56flex-capable ISPs in their local area can do so by visiting Livingston's ISP POP Directory at livingston.com. PortMaster 3
ISPs who have upgraded with Lucent's K56flex modems can add their names to the Livingston ISP POP Directory by registering at the same URL.

On October 15, Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) announced it will acquire Livingston in a merger involving approximately $650 million of Lucent stock. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of December.
