Today, in any state I've ever lived in, an autopsy would absolutely be performed in such circumstances. I think the same would be true in Mass. And I would be surprised were it not the requirement then, too.

It didn't happen today. It happened in the 1970s. You don't have any proof for your position other than you're partisan BS.
