Man, did you ever hit that nail on my head. I'm right there in your scenario "I can see the wisdom of holding a little physical gold (say 20 0z) for some sort of unforseeable emergency where it might be of use (along with water, ammo, food, or petrol). " And wondering whether to sit on it and let my grandkids whisper about that crazy old man, or buy more and try to look like a genius.

So lately I've kinda fallen into the mentality that it will be a "cross-over stake". One in which the wrong confluence of events wipes out every thing else but the pure and gives me some piddly snowball's chance of cashing it in on the new money and making it closer to the end.

How's that for a dose of cynical optimism? And you may just be right about the ultimate worthlessness of it all. I guess you have to realize you can lose either way.
