The point of it is the collecting of taxes: <unfortunately, even if you provide your own services, they keep collecting the taxes!).>

The so-called "services" are a fig leaf used to cover their naked greed. The real purpose is to get hold of OPM, not provide services. Watch them squeal if their pay is halved. There's no need to squeal, just quit and get a better job in the private sector.

Yes, there are many collective matters which require some central authority. But even the US$ was privatized and it has worked well enough [compared with other fiat currencies].
<I depend on it for national defense and certain other things government is the only possibility for. But you really cannot even count on them for THAT anymore (apparently, the Obama government thinks the best defense is an apology for being such a belligerent nation).>

When over half the GDP is spent by governments, that's socialism with a capital s, o, c i, a and l.

A couple of years ago we visited Melbourne and while driving around the hinterlands I was amazed at the ridiculous situation of towns surrounded by and built among trees. It was obviously going to end in flames one way or another some time or other. It was a very short time from observing the hazard and the places [many of them with hundreds of deaths] going up in flames last year.

It was illegal to cut down trees. But it wasn't compulsory to buy a house among them. Or stay living there. Nobody seemed worried - except me raving about how dangerous it was.

Governments can't help but get things wrong in a big way.
