Districts offering an out during Obama address

Joe Pyrah - Daily Herald
Wednesday, September 2, 2009

It's shaping up to be a tough week for the Obama administration in Utah schools.

Already a Davis School principal is apologizing for showing students a commercial full of celebrities telling people to pledge to making the world a better place, and oh, "to be of service to Barack Obama."

Utah County school districts are now looking at options for parents who don't want their kids listening to the president of the United State of America when he makes an unprecedented speech on Tuesday to the nation's students.

The Alpine and Nebo school districts have each received about a dozen calls -- though that doesn't include calls directly to schools -- from concerned parents.

They've been "polite but passionate," said Lana Hiskey, spokeswoman for the Nebo district.

The school board will be voting tonight whether to have schools show the speech, Hiskey said. If the decision is yes, there will be an alternate "educational opportunity" at that time for students whose parents have opted them out.

The Alpine district is leaving the choice of whether to show the speech to individual schools and teachers.

"We don't tell the teachers what do to every day in their classrooms," said spokeswoman Rhonda Bromley.

Bromley said parents are certainly allowed to remove a student from school for a day for whatever reason.
