Sorry, the redneck term indeed is earlier than the reference to coal miners, not the Scots-Irish Presbyterians. However our present usage does not come from that usage nor the earlier Presbyterians but from the Southern share croppers. In fact the term was not even known to many northerners till the 60's civil rights. In fact when I lived in Maryland in the 70's it was used almost exclusive as a term for any southerner with a strong accent. As it was used toward me, and I didn't think I had a strong accent.

However, this has nothing to do with the fact that it is also a derogatory racist term.
