Is Sony using MPEG2 video compression in its next generation camcorders and recordable optical discs????.............................

Sony Makes Prototypes of Optical
Disk Drives

October 30, 1997 (TOKYO) -- Sony Corp. made
prototypes of rewritable optical disk drives that can record
8GB to 12GB on a single-sided 12cm disk.

The Tokyo-based electronics company expects to market such
products by 2000.

Sony has developed three types of drives:

(1) A phase-change optical disk drive with a recording capacity of
8GB using a red semiconductor laser of 635nm as an optical source.

(2) A phase-change optical disk drive with a recording capacity of
12GB using a blue-green semiconductor laser of 515nm as an optical
source.

(3) A magneto-optical disk drive with a recording capacity of 10GB
using a red semiconductor laser of 635nm as an optical source.

Each drive uses an optical system to enhance the numerical aperture to
0.85, by serial-type combining of two object lenses.

Sony has demonstrated a camcorder and compressed the images by
using MPEG2. The images were replayed on the three types of optical
disk drives at 6Mbps or 12Mbps.

"Sony seeks to use this technology as the basis for a next-generation
household video recorder to replace conventional VTRs. The
technology must be able to record video for more than 3 hours on a
single disk. That is, a recording capacity of more than 10GB is needed.

It will be something like a home server equipped with disk-change
functions," said Katsuaki Tsurushima, a Sony corporate vice president.

Tsurushima said that a Zn-Se blue-green laser can play back for 1,000
hours at a low outgoing power range. But if the power range is high, the
laser will only last for a few hours.

In the case of the phase-change optical disk drive, the distance
between the lens and the surface of the disk was expanded, and this
improves control.

As for the magneto-optical disk, the recording method is that of
magnetic field modulation recording.

THE GAME: Five area residents - plus the Business section's mascot, Mark T. Maker - are managing fictitious portfolios that stood at $100,000 on Aug. 1. Contestants can buy and sell daily, but each transaction costs $50. The portfolios are limited to stocks traded on the nation's major exchanges. Mark T. Maker, being the Valley boy he is, has vowed to win the contest picking only local stocks.

THE PAYOFF: Whomever has the largest portfolio on Feb. 1 stands tallest.
