Well, maybe we had a period when the earth was covered with huge greasy bugs. They all flew into caves deep into the earth. A huge asteroid hit the earth & closed the caves. Then over time the earth squished all the greasy bugs & pushed the oil slowly back toward the surface.

The same thing happened to the dinosaurs too.
