Indeed. The question remains, though, what it is about our government that makes a critical difference. Since we don't have more of it than anyone else, you can't credit large size.


And I didn't. And you can't dismiss that our great government does some things very well. Does health insurance qualify?

What government in general does well in things that can be specified to the letter. "You earned 'X' in your lifetime so you get a check for "Y" every month from Social Security at the age of "Z". They do that reliably and cheaply. What government is really bad at is dealing with exceptions... in other words 'thinking' about a unique situation and making a rational decision.

I think health insurance falls into the prior category. Yes there would be "exceptions", unanticipated situations not in the rules... and they would screw up big time. But they wouldn't, by rote, attempt to decline claims based on their profit motive.
