Jim Grant in his latest discusses another Leading Economic Indicator analysis that seems more sophisticated than the Conference Board's. It's the Economic Cycle Research group's version. It's a secret sauce so what individual ingredients go into it are unknown to the public. One can assume that the individual markers used are more or less the same as the CB's, but the weighing and the updating appear to be more complex and perhaps a bit more accurate.

Long story short: ECRI is calling for a very strong recovery, one that will surprise. Grant, a very smart fellow, agrees. Grant also thinks, as I do, that drilling down into the Conference Board's stuff yields a more iffy, possibly bearish, analysis than that spun by the press. He says that the ECRI's indicators unambiguously suggest a strong and surprising recovery.
