The war in Afghanistan is much like the (now non existent) War on Terrorism. There is no mistake that a group of muslim extremist from a variety of countries has declared war on the U.S. and other western cultures. And they have done it with the support of people in a variety of countries. In the same way that the war on terrorism would have had no national boundaries on which to focus, afghanistan has no central government on which to focus.

It is for this reason that the war in Iraq was so necessary. Until then, we we fighting on their terms. And as Van Jones said in an unrelated speech, if you are fighting on their terms the outcome is pre-determined. With Iraq, we made them fight on our terms. Right now, in Afghanistan we are fighting on their terms. And I am convinced that this will continue at least through Obama's term. Perhaps out next president will figure out a way to have them fight on our terms.
