It costs a LOT of money to develop good software. If the developer can't make any money they soon go broke and the product is not updated or just goes away. The reason some of it is free is because they use it as a loss leader in hopes that enough people will buy the product to keep the doors open. That is why when I use free software for a while and am convinced it is really good then I buy a copy to help the company.

Most people think computer programmers are strange nerds who live in attics and subsist on diet Cokes and soda crackers. It is thought that their only pleasure in life is the success of their efforts. The truth of the matter is that most programmers are ordinary middle class citizens with families that like to eat, wear nice clothes, ride in a nice car and live in a nice house. The are just like us.

It is important to support the small independent companies who are the most innovative and creative. Some of them may grow up to be Oracles and McAfees. But there are always more little guys with a vision coming along. It is the American way.

Best to all,

JRH

P.S. Before I sold out and retired I was the founder and CEO of a small software products company. My viewpoint could be construed as biased, but I think not!

P.P.S. My biggest complaint with AVG was it took a loooong time to load when I booted and FF could not come up until AVG was ready.
