Well, it used to be about technology. The Japanese bikes were just far superior to a Harley.

But then it became more of a cultural thing. And I apologize to any of my Harley riding friends, but here in Los Angeles we have a whole subset of rich white boys who try to look like bad boys on the weekend. I see them riding down Ventura Blvd every weekend with cigarettes hanging out of their mouth and their cute little cereal bowl helmets and their bikes roaring down the street just as loud as they can. They sooooo want to be bad boy bikers, but they are just frustrated suburban professionals looking ever so pathetic. And of course, I have no desire to ever be mistaken for a real bad boy biker type. Not that this could ever happen.

I know that there are touring harleys now, but the image that I associate with the name "Harley Davidson" is as I described above. And for better or worse, it is pretty much an indelible impression.
